Research the company

One of the most important things to do before attending a job interview is to research the company. If you turn up with little or no knowledge of the business, the interviewer is going to assume that you’re either lazy or aren’t really bothered about whether or not you get the job. Neither of these things are conductive to a successful interview.

Another good reason to research the company is because it will help you to identify whether or not it’s the right job for you. It will give you a better idea of the industry, how it works, the company’s ethics and the culture. It’s important to know these things before accepting a job because you want to make sure it’s the right fit for you.  

Talk yourself up

A lot of people don’t feel comfortable talking about themselves and most of us don’t like boasting about our achievements. Unfortunately however, this is something that really needs to be done in a job interview if you want to sell yourself in the best possible way.

Think about your achievements and practice talking about them to yourself and to friends and family. You get a very short amount of time to impress at an interview so this is no time to be modest.

Be specific

One of the best pieces of advice you can get about interviewing is to be specific. Don’t just say that you’re good at sales for example – provide evidence of this. How much revenue did you generate last year? Do you always hit target? Were you ever the top salesperson in the company? This level of detail is what really makes people buy into you and what sets you apart from the competition.

Think about your body language

We’re often so busy worrying about what we’re saying that we completely forget about our body language. Believe it or not, this can have a huge impact on how we come across so it’s very important to consider this too.

When you greet your interviewer, make sure your handshake is firm. Try to maintain eye contact as much as possible, sit up straight, don’t cross your arms and make it obvious that you’re listening when the other person is talking.

Know the job description inside out

A job description tells you absolutely everything you need to know about a role – including exactly what the employer is looking for. Despite this however, most people take a quick glance over it and never look at it again.

Before attending a job interview, make sure you know the job description inside out and ensure that all your questions and answers are tailored to this. The more specific you can be to the job, the more likely you are to be successful with your application.
