From competitive salaries and plenty of learning opportunities, here are five great reasons to work in IT.

Whether you’re fresh out of education and can’t decide which job path to go down or you’ve been in the world of employment for some time and want a career change, below are five great reasons why the IT sector is a fantastic one to pursue.

There’s big demand for IT professionals

Technology is becoming increasingly sophisticated, more businesses are promoting themselves online and everyone is wising up to the importance of cyber security. Taking all this into consideration, it’s no surprise that there’s a bigger need for IT professionals than ever before.

According to the Association of Professional Staffing Companies (APSCo), demand for IT professionals in the UK has in fact increased by 28% year-on-year. The data also showed that the number of roles being advertised in the Technology, Media and Telecoms (TMT) sector has risen by 24%.

If that isn’t enough to convince you that a career in IT is a safe bet, the 2018 Tech Nation Report also revealed that the tech industry is expanding 2.6 times faster than the rest of the UK economy and is now worth an impressive £184 billion.

Tech businesses value company culture

Tech companies are renowned for promoting a fun and quirky work environment. Not only does this make them truly enjoyable places to work, it also means there are plenty of great benefits you can enjoy.

Some of the best employee benefit programmes offered by tech companies include:

  • Netflix: healthcare, life insurance, flexible hours, free food and unlimited holiday.
  • Salesforce: healthcare, education and wellness reimbursement, free counselling sessions and seven paid days off a year to do charity work.
  • Adobe: unlimited time off, work-from-home options, training and mentorship programmes, education grants and help covering childcare costs.

You don’t have to work for a major tech firm to benefit either. Smaller, local businesses are catching on to the fact that these benefits attract and retain the cream of the crop and are therefore starting to offer them as well.

You’ll learn new skills

Because technology is always changing, it means that your role is highly likely to evolve. If you take someone working in cyber security for example, there are always going to be new threats to try to overcome.

What’s more, there are often chances to jump in on other projects and transfer your skills to another role if you fancy a change in the future.

Job satisfaction

When it comes to job satisfaction, the IT sector consistently performs well. Not only do one in 12 of all candidates choose it as their preferred sector, 87% of professionals currently working in tech say they genuinely enjoy their job.

This is likely to come down to the fact that no two days are the same, there’s always something new to learn and there’s normally a great office culture.

Salaries are on the rise

As well as being enjoyable, IT jobs come with lucrative pay packets. Within the last year, IT salaries have risen by 6% - taking the average salary up to £53,069. 88% of tech professionals also say that they earn enough to meet current living standards.

While it’s highly unlikely you’ll hit this salary straight away, the earning potential for IT jobs is fantastic and with the ability to move around so easily, the sky’s the limit.
